“College”, “postsecondary education”, or “higher education” are different ways of describing any type of education or training one receives after graduating from high school or getting a GED. The Minnesota Office of Higher Education (OHE) collects data on public colleges and universities in Minnesota, and private colleges which are licensed or registered under state law. Basic Needs Insecurity

Minnesota State Colleges, two-year

30 public two-year community, technical and comprehensive institutions that are part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.

Minnesota State Universities, four-year

seven public four-year comprehensive institutions that are part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.

A note on demographic information based on race/ethnicity and gender

Survey respondents to the #RealCollege survey were able to self-identify demographic information and select multiple categories on the questions regarding gender identity and racial and ethnic background. Therefore, classifications are not mutually exclusive, and results are dependent on how each survey respondent understands the terms in relation to themselves. For example, a student may consider themselves both Transgender and Female. Related to the first/top chart, while some people use the terms American Indian and Alaska Native and Indigenous interchangeably, others use American Indian or Alaska Native to indicate that they are tribally enrolled in one or more nations, while Indigenous means they are descended from Indigenous ancestors but not necessary tribally enrolled.

Housing Insecurity Report

Housing insecure student

A high school student who was marked as having a McKinney-Vento homeless flag at any point during grades nine through twelve. Housing insecurity is tracked in K-12 data systems because of the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Please note that the data on housing insecure students likely undercounts the actual number of students experiencing housing insecurity.

Free or Reduced Price Lunch (FRPL)

A K-12 student eligible for free or reduced-price school meals. Students in households with incomes below 185 percent of the federal poverty level are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.

Special Education (SPED)

Students in this category are disabled and have an Individualized Education Program, or IEP, to make arrangements for their special education services and specialized instruction.

Limited English Proficiency (LEP)

Refers to students who have been assessed as needing additional English language instruction.

Campus Sexual Assault

Sexual assault

Refers to rape, fondling, incest, or statutory rape as these terms are defined within both state and federal law (see legislative language linked in Resources).

Scope of incidents

The annual Sexual Assault Data Report includes the number of incidents of sexual assault reported to the institution in which either the alleged victim or respondent was a member of the campus community (employee or student) at the time of the incident, the incident occurred on the institution’s campus (or on property owned/rented by the institution), or the incident occurred at an institutionally-sponsored event.

Complainant

The person reporting having experienced sexual assault.

Respondent

The person accused of sexual assault in the report.
